West Milford High School senior Thomas Glade has been named a commended student and a semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented by principal Paul Gorski to this scholastically talented student.

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 62 annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

A member of the Class of 2017, Thomas is an accomplished delegate of the Model UN and Congress, founded the school’s Strategic Gaming Club, and was a semifinalist in the New Jersey Scholars’ Program and a state finalist in the New Jersey National History Day competition. In school, he serves peers and community members as a member of the National and Foreign Language Honor Societies. Outside of school, Thomas has undertaken multiple leadership roles in the Boy Scouts, soon to earn Eagle Scout honors. He volunteers at the West Milford Animal Shelter and, amidst all the aforementioned involvements, still finds time to work 25 hours per week at a local business.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

About 1.6 Million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
