  • Door knobs like this one were stolen from the classroom doors of Hillcrest between the first week of July and the first week of August.

The Hillcrest Community Center has pretty much been shuttered since the township's exit on June 30. Someone, though, has been in there.

The door knobs from each of the classroom doors in this former school have been stolen, all 31 sets. They aren't your everyday door knobs. They are antiques from the New York City schools.

That is according to West Milford Board of Education President Jim Foody who said the theft occurred between the first week of July and the first week of August.

"There was no sign of forced entry and some windows were left open," said Foody, of the Hillcrest building.

He was notified along with the rest of the board trustees last Friday in their pre-meeting packet.

The school district filed a police report on the matter.

"That wasn't a kid doing this," said Foody. "That was an adult."

Foody said the new Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Chris Kelly took a tour of the district-owned building the first week of July, noticing the unique knobs and even photographing them.

As far as he knows, nothing else was taken from the building.

A set of the antique Public Schools City of New York door knobs was found for sale on for $219.

Anyone with information about the missing door knobs is asked to call the West Milford Police at 973-728-2800.
