Pope John XXIII High School Class of 2017 graduate Trevor Backman will attend Marist College as a pre-med major in the fall 2017. The West Milford resident graduated with honors from Pope John and received an academic scholarship to play Division I baseball at Marist.

A four-year varsity player and two-year captain, Trevor received the Brian Fleury Leadership Award and was selected to the NJAC All-Academic Team, NJAC First Team All Conference, 2017 All-Herald Baseball First Team, First Team Honors All-NJAC American Division, and Second Team All NJ Region and Honorable Mention. The Marist left-hander recruit finished his senior season with a 6-1 record, a 1.65 ERA in 50 innings pitched and a team-high 78 strikeouts which placed him 7th in Non-Public, North A top pitchers, 14th in statewide strikeout leaders and 10th in most strikeouts as a PJ Lion.

His leadership helped earn the Lions a share of the NJAC American Division crown, a Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Tournament title for the second time in program history, an appearance in the Non-Public, North A final for the first time since 2011 and voted NJ Herald Team of the Year.
