Walter "Walt" Thomas Toews passed away peacefully at Hackensack Hospital in Hackensack, on Aug. 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife and family after a long battle with cancer. He was 73 years old.

No stranger to the fast lane, Walt's passion for cars and racing was evident in the business he owned with his partners Louie and Anne -- LAW (Louie, Anne and Walter) Automotive in Fairview, N.J., which opened in 1965.

Walt was well-known for building racing engines and was an avid NHRA drag car racer. He will be inducted into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame where his love for the sport will live on.

Walt was employed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for 34 years. He was dedicated to work and had a perfect attendance record during his tenure there.

He had 12 years of education, including trade school, and was active in the Army National Guard from 1959-1965.

Walt was president of the Lindy's Lake Association.

He and his family took annual road trips together during which they camped, hiked and biked.

Walt was born on March 6, 1944 at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, to Paul Alfred Toews and Alice Joan Stapleton.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Elizabeth; five children, Paul Joseph, Jenny Lee and her husband,Todd Kenneth Hoven; Debra Pauline and her husband, Gregory Andrew Martin Jr.; Derek Paul and his wife, Christine Marie; Alison Mary and her husband, Dylan Buckley.

He is also survived by a brother, Thomas, and his wife, Susan; four grandchildren: Gregory A. Martin III, Emma Elizabeth Martin, Wesley Joseph Toews and Michael Thomas Buckley.

Two more grandchildren are expected to arrive later this year.

A memorial service for Walt was held at the Barrett Funeral Home in Tenafly on Saturday, Aug. 12.

The family is asking that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Walt's name.
