On Monday, Aug. 21, the Earth crossed the shadow of the moon, creating a total solar eclipse. Eclipses happen about every six months, but this one was special. For the first time in almost 40 years, the path of the moon's shadow passed through the continental United States. Folks from coast to coast gathered for this exciting event, having parties and picnics. All were warned not to look at the eclipse with the naked eye so many had their special eclipse glasses to view it.

A couple photographers sent photos of the eclipse from neighboring towns. West Milford Messenger photographer Mark Cranston took his photo in Dingman's Ferry, Pennsylvania at 2:24 p.m.
