WEST MILFORD — A large and dangerous floating stump field on Greenwood Lake has finally been removed, according to the Greenwood Lake Commission.

During its stump reduction project of some 1,200 stumps, one of the largest and most dangerous floating stump fields rose to the surface last Sunday.

Local residents John and Carol Joseph and Dan Mason helped secure markers on the stumps. On Monday, Stumpbusters, the project's contractor, Dan Sullivan of Small Craft Marina and the town, which used its weed harvester, worked together to cut and remove the debris field.

"This will be the most important part of the entire project because of the extreme danger it has posed for all these many years," said Paul Zarrillo, a commissioner, in a press release. "We are all very fortunate that it came to the surface as the project is going on."

The commission is also making the old growth stumps available to the public for purchase (i.e. tax deductible donations). They range from 200 to 400 years old.
