The West Milford Board of Education will consider a renegotiated contract for Superintendent Dr. Alex Anemone at a meeting on Sept. 19. The meeting will begin 7:30 p.m. in the media center at Westbrook School.

The board will hold a hearing for the public to speak at the meeting about the proposal before they take any action.

Recent action in Trenton ended the $175,000 salary cap for chief public school administrators. The limit was enacted to ensure that top administrator’s salaries would not rise above Gov. Chris Christie’s pay.

The West Milford board is reportedly considering giving Anemone a 1.5 percent increase plus a $2,500 stipend for administering a school district that includes a high school.

School board President James Foody said trustees will closely continue to review Anemone’s work this year and perhaps they will revisit the salary issue again next year. Anemone earned $8,274 in merit pay during the 2016-17 year.

The board could increase the salary to a maximum of $191,584 for 2017-18 and could provide a 2 percent increase beyond that for each subsequent contract year.

Anemone, in his second year as chief administrator of the school district, started his job in West Milford with a $165,500 salary.

After being superintendent in the Harding School District for four years, Anemone applied for the job in West Milford when James McLaughlin left in 2014 to take a job in North Plainfield. With former Lakeland Regional High School Superintendent Anthony Riscica filling in as superintendent and no word from West Milford about the job he applied for, Anemone took a job as Butler School Superintendent. He left Butler when West Milford hired him in 2016.

Anemone earned his doctorate degree at Seton Hall University, a master's degree in administration at St. Peter College and his undergraduate degree at Siena College.
