  • The West Milford Devil Rays swim team, based out of Bubbling Springs, celebrates wrapping up a great competitive season.

The West Milford Devil Rays swim team had an incredible swim season this summer.

Our team, based out of Bubbling Springs, participates in two leagues during the 9-week competitive swim season.

The team consisted of 70 participants who swam in all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. They also took part in relays against teams such as the Wayne Waves, the Pequannock Piranhas and the Smoke Rise Stingrays.

The swimmers also competed in Invitationals on Saturdays during the season that highlighted their particular talents. There were many improvements in individual performances all season long.

We had many new swimmers joining the team this year from areas such as Kinnelon, Newfoundland and Warwick, N.Y. This diversity in our swimmers allowed our team to show our heart in each and every meet.

As we neared the end of our season we swam in the Ramapo Championship meet. Many awards were won by the team including two First Place winners: William Gibson for 25M breaststroke and Emma Gibson in 25M backstroke. Both the girls' and the boys' 11 to 12-year-old age group relays earned second place, along with Edward Gruber for 50M breaststroke and Isabel Gibson for 25M freestyle.

We also had a handful of third-place finisher with Kyra Bohmann for 25 butterfly, Jackson Telford for 25M backstroke, Alexandra Gruber for 25M backstroke and Gabriella Klimczuk for 50M butterfly.

After this championship meet, the team entered our qualifying championship known as the Lakeland A’s. We had another set of impressive swims with 22 top 16 finishes. Joe Sarcona took home first place in men’s 50M freestyle and second in men’s 50M butterfly. Along with this tough competition we had a team outing at Funplex for water slides and go cart racing. The team wrapped up the season with a picnic at Bubbling Springs hosted by the team parents.
