End of season party set at Wallisch Homestead

The Friends of Wallisch Homestead (FOWH) and Sustainable West Milford Community Garden and Wallisch Homestead will be hosting an end of season event on site Saturday, Sept. 30 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. They will be inviting all groups who they are associated with to provide an update on the work that has been completed and the events that have been held at the site this past season. The event is open to the public.

The Sustainable West Milford Community garden at Wallisch Homestead has been very bountiful this season. With all 25 plots worked by loving hands, the garden flourished and in such a beautiful setting. The working windmill seems to take you back in time to the days when the pace was slower and things were simpler.

In 2016, a plot was donated to The Association for Special Children to share the benefits and rewards of gardening. Twelve 90-minute classes have been held each season Saturday mornings to teach the group about soil preparation, planting, fertilization, pest control and of course, harvesting.

Celeste Hampton and Judy Dejosia were praised for lending their time, expertise, plants, and soil amendments to the program.

There will also be an exhibition of plein air artists on site who will be set up painting landscapes during the event.

FOWH members will be available to tour the various projects and answer any questions on the work that has been completed as well as the future goals of the organization. Comments from the community will also be solicited for the group to incorporate into their events calendar in upcoming seasons.

The group is planing to have refreshments, entertainment and possibly a light lunch on site.

The invitation will include the West Milford Township and Board of Education governing bodies as well as the members of the Passaic Board of Freeholders and the Passaic County Dept of Planning and Economic Development who have been instrumental of providing grant funds towards the preservation efforts to date. All exhibitors such as the Star Gazing group, Yoga Class instructor, Plein Air art group and the presenters at the art exhibition are invited along with all members of the community that attended these events. Contractors that have worked on the project to date will be encouraged to attend as well.
