  • Awaken Recovery, a program aimed at people struggling with addiction, meets at the Journey Church of the Highlands on Tuesdays.

In recent years, the stronghold of addiction has grabbed communities with a seemingly ever-tightening grip, say the organizers of Awaken Recovery.

The program was launched in September and meetings are held from 7-8 p.m. every Tuesday at the Journey Church of the Highlands, 184 Marshall Hill Road.

Organizers hope to expand the program to other times and locations.

According to Pastor Nicholas Padovani, it has been well attended so far and feedback has been positive.

Padovani shared a note from one the the attendees, Joe.

“Thank you for being so supportive,” the man wrote. “The need for this program, Awaken Recovery, in our communities is real, as are my needs for it. And it's a meeting I look forward to attending. My walk is a continuous journey and I'm blessed I get to participate with it.”

The program has two components to it: weekly meetings and personal mentoring.

The free meetings are open to those struggling with any type of addiction, as well as family members and loved ones. It involves a unique approach to recovery by dealing primarily with issues related to identity, community, and "the recovery of joy and peace," organizers said.

There is a spiritual element to the program, but it's open to all, believers and non-believers, they added.

Organizers say it seeks to "provide a safe and non-judgmental space where people can come and be themselves and find encouragement and empowerment to rise above addiction."

Mentors provide support behond the meetings.

Awaken Recovery is a free program.
