West Milford bowlers advance after North 1B tournament win

— The West Milford High School bowling program recently captured the NJSIAA North 1B Sectional Tournament championship at Lodi Lanes with a score of 3,021.

Wayne Hills placed second with a score of 2,905. RJ Utter had a high series of 694 and Mike Nicholas had a 279 high game for the Highlanders.

West Milford is now slated to compete in the NJSIAA State Team Championships on Feb. 12 at the Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick.

WRESTLINGThe Highlanders advanced to the NJSIAA North 1 Group 3 Sectional Tournament quarterfinal round where they were defeated, 48-19, by Montville.

Bailey Justin (106 pounds) and Reilly Fleet (113 pounds) both won via the pin route for West Milford.

Trevor Fleet won by major decision at 126 pounds and Craig Blumeling won a decision at 145 pounds.

Montville entered the bracket as the No. 3 seed and West Milford was seeded sixth.

Two days prior to the playoff match against Montville, the Highlanders defeated both Vernon (66-9) and Montgomery (57-15).

In the victory over Vernon, Carlos Villeda (120 pounds), Jeremiah Sanchez (132 pounds), Brandon Sanchez (138 pounds) and Mike Podmokly (220 pounds) all won via pin for West Milford.

In the triumph over Montgomery, Brandon Sanchez (132 pounds), Craig Blumeling (145 pounds), Mike Haggerty (152 pounds) and Norman Rubinsky (160 pounds) all won by pin-fall for the Highlanders.

GIRL’s BASKETBALLAfter 17 games, West Milford had an overall record of 10-7.

The Highlanders topped Hawthorne, 63-38, last weekend in the Passaic County Tournament.

Molly Christie and Lauren Girardin led a balanced scoring attack for West Milford with 15 points and 14 points, respectively.

The victory propelled the Highlanders to a Passaic County Tournament quarterfinal round game versus Passaic Tech on Feb. 10.

Two days before the contest against Hawthorne, the Highlanders dropped a Big North Conference Independence Division game to Lakeland.

Girardin had a team-high 13 points for West Milford.

In their last game for the month of January, the Highlanders lost, 50-44, to Fair Lawn in Independence Division play.

Girardin posted a team-high 15 points and Siobhan Murray tallied 12 points.

BOY’S BASKETBALLThe Highlanders have a road game scheduled at Mount Olive on Feb. 13.

Last week, West Milford lost a Big North Conference Independence Division contest to Lakeland.

Andrew Finke paced all scorers with 30 points for the Highlanders.

Josiah Basket had 16 points and Brandon Licursi added 10 points for West Milford.

A few days prior to the match-up versus Lakeland, the Highlanders were defeated by Fair Lawn in Independence Division action.

After 16 games, West Milford had a mark of 6-10.
