Advisory health board sponsoring free special needs workshop for county

WEST MILFORD - All Passaic County residents are invited to attend a free workshop for adults, parents and children with special needs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 in the cafeteria of West Milford High School, located at 67 Highlander Drive.

The West Milford Health Advisory Board in conjunction with The Association for Special Children and Families and The Highlands Family Success Center is sponsoring the seond annual “Road to Resources: A Spotlight on Special Needs” workshop, according to the Health Advisory Board.

The workshop is free of charge and is open to all Passaic County residents, according to the board.

A free lunch will be offered and childcare will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon.

Prior registration is requested by calling 973-506-6575.

During the workshop, attendees will learn about resources for families of individuals with special needs, and representatives from several organizations will answer questions and speak about available resources for Passaic County residents.

Introductions and preliminary remarks will be made in the morning session followed by a light lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m..

Afternoon breakout sessions will include presentations on laws pertaining to individuals with special needs; navigating the process for getting help for the transition into adulthood; administering CPR; and Mindfulness, helping your child find his or her inner calm; the use of therapy animals; and services for the deaf and hard of hearing, according to the board.

Among others, featured presentations will include speakers from the Children’s Mental Health Planner of the Department of Human Services; the New Jersey Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing; the Circle of Care for Families and Children of Passaic County; the ARC of Bergen and Passaic Counties; the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services; Hinkle, Fingles, Prior & Fischer, Attorneys at Law; and Dr. Elizabeth McQuaid, Director of Special Services for the West Milford Township Schools, according to the board.

All Passaic County residents are welcomed.
